Disc Error is a sound concept that uses modified portable CD players as sound generators. Through targeted modifications to the circuitry, the devices have been altered so that reading and conversion processes - which are normally suppressed during regular operation - become audible.
These glitches are triggered selectively using control signals from the modular synthesizer and can be sequenced.
Playing with repeating samples during paused playback, as well as short-circuiting the buffer and digital-to-analog converter, creates a sonic aesthetic characterized by digital errors. The resulting structures are determined not only by the stored audio material but also by the malfunctioning of the devices themselves.
The project is based on an artistic practice that explores sound through DIY electronics and circuit bending. At its core is the question of how technical systems can be expanded, reconfigured, and utilized beyond their original function.
